Laura Roberts
PADI IDC Staff Instructor /
Sales Specialist
Bio: Laura Roberts was born in Missouri and had lived there most of her life. One day while pursuing a Fine Arts Degree in Computer Animation Laura, frustrated with the computer, turned to her best friend and said, “I can’t do this the rest of my life”. He said, “Me neither”. She said, “Let’s be pirates!” He said, “Ok.” After having gotten a taste for travel and Scuba diving in 2005 during a semester in Australia Laura returned to finish a degree in the discipline she was actually passionate about, Sculpture and Ceramics. However, with an art degree, a looming recession, a depressing restaurant management job, and the Travel Bug’s poison pumping through her veins, Laura decided to make good on the saying, “A Pirates Life for Me.”
She decided to do the most legal profession next to actual Piracy and that was become a PADI Scuba instructor. It was through this she knew she would have an adventurous job that would also help fund traveling. With a deep desire to trace her Irish roots and be immersed in the culture, Laura found an internship that would give her solid instructor training in rather challenging seas. Perfect for a Pirate or a ‘Divewench’ , one of many nicknames she responds too. What was meant to be a 9 month stint turned into 2 years on the Emerald Isle with trips to 7 other countries.
Upon, returning to the USA Laura looked straight away for a job in Hawaii, the state she fell in love with on the way to Australia in 2005. A summer of freelancing brought her to Jack’s Diving Lockers door where she met Terri on Ocean Day and the rest as they say, is history.
Laura especially enjoys underwater photography and showing people how to get good results with even a basic point and shoot camera. She likes all marine animals but gets especially excited over nudibrachs, sea hares, octopus and cuttlefish. What Laura loves about Kona is that the underwater topography is really interesting. She loves diving through caves, canyons and lava tubes. What she loves about Hawaii is the natural, dramatic beauty of the island and the weather.
