Last month Jack’s Diving Locker participated in the West Hawai’i 2019 GEMS. The event at the Marriot Courtyard King Kamehameha Beach Hotel. The GEMS program (Girls Engaged in Math and Science) is an educational program that reaches out to 5th-grade girls to get them involved in STEM-related activities. In West Hawaii, the event is sponsored by the American Associate of University Women. JDL has participated in the event for the last several years.
This year Alli Craig, Junior Programs Coordinator, and Elle Brown, Junior Program’s Assistant Coordinator, represented JDL at the ‘UnderwaterAdventures’ booth. The girls all participated in a buoyancy experiment where they were given a container and a bunch of gems. They then added the rocks one by one until their ‘vessel’ was neutrally buoyant in a tub of water. Next, the girls got to try on scuba gear, breathe through the regulator and learn some basics about scuba diving in the ocean! This was said by many to be the highlight of their day! We look forward to participating in the West Hawai’i GEMS 2020 event!
