Keller Laros of Jack’s Diving Locker was named Sea Hero for the month of July by Scuba Diving Magazine and Oris Watches. With this honor, he is a nominee for Sea Hero of the Year and the winner will be announced at the DEMA convention (large scuba trade show) in November. Sea Heroes are people of action, devoted to protecting the planet’s oceans and marine life through conservation, technology or by simply helping others. In January 2013, Keller was guiding divers on the Jack’s Diving Locker manta ray night dive when a Bottlenose dolphin swam up to the divers. Keller noticed the fishing line wrapped around the left pectoral fin of the animal. He signaled to the dolphin to come and it did! He then removed the fishing line from this wild animal. It was truly an amazing event. Keller is no stranger to helping ocean animals. He started Manta Pacific Research Foundation in 2002 with a dedicated group of manta enthusiasts and worked for manta protection in the State of Hawaii. In 2009, a law was passed prohibiting the capture or removal of manta rays in State waters.
