Open Water Diver


Learning to scuba dive gives you the opportunity to experience the thrill and excitement of exploring Hawaii’s underwater world. Upon successful completion of this course, students become PADI Open Water Divers and can sign-up for our Two Tank Day Trip or the Kona Manta Ray Night Dive.

The PADI eLearning programs allows you to start the PADI Open Water Diver course immediately with the on-line eLearning course.  In addition to the eLearning program, students also participate in pool training and four ocean dives at Jack’s Diving Locker in Kona, Hawaii.

Open Water eLearning





  • Ages 12 & up
  • Ages 10 -11 with Instructor approval


  • Instruction
  • Tanks, Weights, BCD, Regulator, Dive Computer, Wetsuit
  • Shore and Boat Dives (usually two days on the boat)


  • eLearning Online course and Student Materials
  • Mask, snorkel, fins (rental available)


  • 3 full days. Additional day(s) needed to complete performance requirements results in additional fees.
  • Scheduled classes – Monday-Wednesday (Monday-pool, Tuesday-ocean dives 1&2, Wednesday-ocean dives 3&4)  OR Friday – Sunday (Friday-pool, Saturday-ocean dives 1&2, Sunday-ocean dives 3&4).   We recommend joining these dates for the fun of obtaining your Open Water certification with other people!

  • Online Course fees paid directly to PADI:  $190
  • Pool instruction and 4 ocean dives at Jack’s Diving Locker:  $550 plus tax
    (pricing applicable with a minimum of 2 students)
  • Student Materials:  $36 plus tax (w/student discount applied)
  • Rental mask, snorkel and fins (if needed): $25 plus tax
  • TOTAL COST is approximately $780-810 plus tax
  • Private options:
    • Private course:  $1,300 plus online course, materials, rentals, and tax
    • Private individual days:  the regular rate above plus an additional $250 per private day

  • Review Medical Statement.  If you have a YES to a medical question, you will need to get a doctor’s approval before starting the course.

  • 24 hour cancellation policy. Cancellations made 24 hours or less prior to course start date result in a full charge.  48 hour policy during winter holiday season- Dec 20-Jan 5..

DAY 1 (8am – 4pm)

  • Before class: Print out PADI eLearning Record Form (printer available at shop for travelers)
  • Front counter: Check-in and purchase materials
  • Classroom: Complete Quick Review
  • Pool: Watermanship assessment
  • Pool: Confined Water Skill Dives 1- 5
    *Courses typically finish around 4pm.  Occasionally they will run as late as 5pm.  However, if you are unable to complete the requirements in the allotted time, additional arrangements and fees may be required.

DAY 2 (8 am – 4 pm)

  • Classroom: Briefing for Open Water Dives
  • Boat or Shore: Open Water Training Dives 1 and 2
  • Classroom: Log dives

DAY 3 (8 am – 4 pm)

  • Classroom: Briefing for Open Water Dives
  • Boat: Open Water Training Dives 3 and 4
  • Classroom: Log dives
  • Certifications issued with successful completion

Certified divers are allowed to rent or purchase scuba equipment as well as plan and conduct open water dives independently within the limits of their training.  Certified divers may also continue training with the PADI Advanced Open Water course and PADI Specialty courses such as Digital Underwater Photography, Underwater Naturalist, and many more.For information about the Open Water Diver course with manual and DVD please click here for more details.
